Unincorporated Martinez

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR STORM DRAINS FLOW?

The unincorporated areas around Martinez are defined by several key creeks that are part of the larger Alhambra Creek Watershed. This watershed is a significant system, with tributaries such as Franklin Creek and Pacheco Creek flowing through the landscape. Franklin Creek, for example, is a tributary of Alhambra Creek that flows through the John Muir National Historic Site, providing a vital wildlife corridor and adding to the natural beauty of the area. These creeks and their valleys have a rich history and are an essential part of the local ecosystem, providing habitat for native species and contributing to the area's hydrology.

In recent years, a major focus for this area has been the restoration of Pacheco Marsh. Located where Pacheco Creek and Walnut Creek meet the Suisun Bay, this marsh was historically a large tidal wetland but had been diked and filled over time. Thanks to partnerships between organizations like the John Muir Land Trust and Contra Costa County Flood Control District, the marsh is being restored to its former tidal glory. This project is a crucial effort to improve habitat for fish and birds, manage flood risk, and provide new recreational opportunities for the public, including trails and a kayak launch. These restoration projects highlight a growing commitment to rehabilitating and preserving the region's natural waterways.
