earth day cleanup 2025

cloverdale

On Friday, May 9, the City of Cloverdale hosted a highly successful Community Unity Event that brought together high school students, city staff, and local volunteers in a collaborative effort to beautify and maintain key areas across the city. The event focused on cleaning up public spaces, waterways, and stormwater infrastructure, all of which play an essential role in preserving environmental quality and public health.

This initiative exemplifies the City’s commitment to keeping our waterways and surroundings clean by reducing trash buildup and preventing the introduction of harmful pollutants such as plastics, metals, and chemicals into local ecosystems. These efforts contribute to the health of the Russian River and our stormwater systems and support compliance with the City’s stormwater permit requirements.

Storm Drain Cleanup:
Collected 26 lbs. of trash from city storm drains along the downtown corridor, stretching approximately 1 mile from Cloverdale High School to the end of Franklin Street.

Cloverdale River Park Trail:
Removed 22 lbs. of trash along the 2-mile Cloverdale County River Park Trail.

Russian River:
Collected 12 lbs. of trash from 600 feet of riverbank along the Russian River.

Cloverdale Creek (Library Area):
Extracted 12 lbs. of trash from the creek area adjacent to the Library parking lot.

Youth Involvement:
Engaged 45 students in trash collection and environmental service work for three hours.

Playground Maintenance:
Spread 80 yards of certified playground wood chips across all city parks, enhancing safety and aesthetics.

Cemetery Weed Abatement:
Conducted comprehensive weed abatement at the Cloverdale Cemetery to improve grounds maintenance and appearance.

IMPACT

Efforts such as this Community Unity Event provide measurable environmental benefits and foster civic pride. Not only do these projects enhance the cleanliness and safety of public spaces, but they also serve to educate and engage the community—particularly youth—in environmental stewardship. These actions directly support the City’s stormwater permit objectives and help sustain cleaner, healthier ecosystems throughout Cloverdale.
